FCP 7 change speed function is not working.

When I try to use it sometimes it doesn't let me modify the length of the clip and sometimes it let's me and even gets shows the "needs render" red - but then it doesn't shrink the clip to size or actually render it correctly. It was working perfectly well for a while yesterday and now it's stopped. What can I do?
